Johannes Brahms: Symphony no. 4
The Hague Orchestra, conducted by Jules van Hessen
The explanation during this concert is in Dutch !
Brahms's Fourth Symphony is the crowning glory of his symphonic oeuvre. Building on the innovations initiated by his predecessor Beethoven, the symphony has a number of surprises. Maestro Jules reveals, among other things, the unprecedented climax at the end of the first movement, the unusual groove and stray triangle in the third movement, and how Brahms brings a refined ode to Bach in the final movement. Brahms considered his Fourth to be his best symphonic work, and that is saying something for one of the most formidable critics of his peers.
